Bluestar Cultural
We chose to look at Visual Art for the Cultural section of the project.
We concentrated on a number of well-known European artists.
We investigated their work and created work of our own based on or inspired by them.
We endeavoured to include work from each strand of the Visual Arts Curriculum.
Artists we looked at include Paul Klee, Gustav Klimt, Piet Mondrian and Picasso.
Our work is on display around the school.

Paul Klee
Paul Klee (1879 – 1940) was a German/Swiss painter. He left more than 9000 artworks. In 1912 he saw the work of Picasso and Malevich, and he met Robert Delaunay, who believed colour is the most important element in a painting. After a trip to Tunisia in 1914 Klee started to paint in a more colourful and abstract way. He painted many subjects: landscapes, portraits, animals, mythology, mysterious machines. In his work he combined abstract and figurative shapes.
We made portraits in the style of Klee. We also used MS Paint on our computers to create ccolourful cityscapes. Finally we used recycled boxes and other materials to make an art construction piece of a city. We worked in four groups. When its all put together it looks very colourful and impressive!!

PicassoPablo Picasso was born more than 120 years ago (1881) in Malaga, Spain.
He is famous for being the co-founder of Cubism which is a style of painting where objects of the painting subject are broken up and re-painted in an abstract form. When Pablo was age 7 his father (who was also a painter) gave him artistic training in figure drawing and oil painting. Later on Pablo studied art in Madrid and then went to Paris when he was about 19. In 1900 Paris was considered the art capital of Europe. Picasso's work is divided into periods - The Blue Period (1901-1904), which were sad looking paintings using blue and blue-green colours. The Rose Period (1905-1907), which was a more happy style with orange and pink colours. The African-influenced Period (1908-1909) and The Cubism Period(1909- 1919) We used an online computer programme called Mr Picassohead to make Picasso style portraits. We also worked in groups to create cubist works by drawing around shapes. |

We studied the work of Gustav KlimtGustav Klimt was born in Austria to a poor, immigrant gold engraver. He began his career paintings murals and ceilings in buildings. His decorations and ornamentations grew in popularity and he remained in steady work. When Klimt was 30 both his father and his brother died and he had to provide for their families as well as for himself.
In 1908 his art moved into a new phase. It was marked by widespread use of gold leaf. These are the paintings most people are familiar with, including one called The Kiss. Klimt worked slowly and carefully on each piece of work because he had to apply tiny bits of gold leaf to his paintings. One of his portrait paintings sold in 2006 at auction for more money than any other painting ever had before: $135 million! We used all sorts of shiny and textured paper and card with sequins and stars to make pictures of boots and shoes in the style of Klimt. |
Piet MondrianWe looked at the work of Piet Mondrian
Piet Mondrian was born in the Netherlands in 1872. He was influenced by many different styles and even helped found an artistic movement called De Stijl. He died in 1944, having created about 250 paintings in his lifetime. The paintings that he is most famous for are rectangles of white and primary colors, dissected by black lines. However. Mondrian’s first paintings depicted scenes found in real life. As his style grew and changed, he stopped using any colors except the three primaries: red, yellow, and blue. Mondrian became interested in cubism which is an artistic style in which the subject is broken into meaningful pieces and rearranged in a new order to show the most important parts of the object. Mondrian’s paintings became more and more abstract. Mondrian moved to Paris in 1912 so he could study cubism further. In 1914 Mondrian returned home just before World War I broke out. During this time he became friends with some other artists and together they began the new movement, De Stijl. De Stijl was the name of the journal that Mondrian and his friends started. The members of the De Stijl movement believed the essence, the foundation of all things could be found in the simplest form: straight lines and primary colours. We used Microsoft Paint to make our own compositions. |
